Young Composers
The RPS Composition Prize gives the chance for young composers to write a work for a prestigious professional performance, and is supported by the Delius Trust and the RVW Trust. The Cheltenham Festival commission is awarded by the Susan Bradshaw Composers’ Fund which a was set up in memory of the pianist, teacher and writer after her death in January 2005.
What Does The Prize Offer?
Four £3,000 commissions will be awarded.
Three of the winning composers will join the Philharmonia’s Young Composers Academy, in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Society, and will be commissioned to write a piece for members of the Philharmonia to be performed as part of the Music of Today Series. They will also attend regular workshops and seminars throughout the year.
The fourth winner will receive the Susan Bradshaw Composers’ Fund commission to write a chamber work for the Cheltenham Music Festival, plus a workshop and performance of the commissioned piece.
Who Is It Open To?
Composers under the age of 29 who are studying, or have studied at any conservatoire or university in the UK.
What Are The Entrance Requirements?
A portfolio of three compositions and a CD recording of one work must be submitted with a completed entry form. Proof of age and a letter from your place of study are also required.
How can I apply?
Applications must be made on the official form which will be available to download on this page at least six months before the closing date. A fee of £20 is payable. Entrance fee is waived to RPS members.
When Is The Next Closing Date?
31 March, annually. NB: The office will not be open for deliveries on Saturday 31 March 2012, and we will therefore be accepting applications before 1pm on Monday 2 April.
